2013-2024 Ram 1500 5.7L Hemi oil and filter change
Tools
- 3/8 inch drive ratchet
- 13mm socket for the drain plug
- 24mm or 15/16 inch socket for the spin-on filter (or a 76mm oil-filter cap wrench)
- Torque wrench that covers 20 to 30 ft lbs
- Oil drain pan, 8 quart capacity minimum
- Funnel with a long neck
- Nitrile gloves and shop rags
- Ramps or a two-post lift
Parts
- Engine oil - Mopar 5W-20 full synthetic, 7.0 US quarts total (Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5W-20, Pennzoil Platinum 5W-20, or Valvoline Advanced Full Synthetic 5W-20 acceptable, all API SP/dexos-compatible)
- Oil filter - Mopar MO-899 (68191349AC) (Fram XG10600, Wix 57502, K&N HP-7008, or Purolator Boss PBL14610 acceptable OE equivalents)
- Drain plug gasket - Mopar 6104728AA if the crush washer will not reseat cleanly
Steps
01Warm the engine
Idle the engine for two to three minutes if it is cold. Warm oil pours faster and carries more soot and combustion byproducts out with it. On the 5.7 Hemi with MDS, cold oil tends to hang in the top of the block and the lifter valley, so a brief warm-up cycle empties the crankcase more completely. Do not run the truck long enough to make the exhaust scalding.
02Lift the truck and locate the drain
Chock the rear wheels, drive the front onto ramps or lift with a two-post hoist. The oil pan sits low and to the driver side of the crossmember. The 13mm hex-head drain plug is on the passenger side of the pan, angled slightly downward. On DT-generation trucks with the aero skid plate, remove the four 8mm bolts holding the small plastic access panel to expose the plug.
03Drain the oil
Position the drain pan directly below the plug. Break the plug loose with a ratchet, then finish by hand while pressing inward against the pan flange. Once the threads release, pull the plug straight away so it does not drop into the pan. Let the oil drain fully - a warm 5.7 pan empties in about five minutes. Inspect the plug magnet for large metal chips before wiping it clean.
04Reinstall the drain plug
Wipe the pan boss and confirm the crush washer is intact and flat. If the washer is dished or cracked, fit a new one. Thread the plug in by hand two turns to confirm it is not cross-threaded, then torque the oil pan drain plug to 25 ft lbs (34 Nm). Verify against your service manual. Do not over-torque - the 5.7 pan is aluminum and stripped drain-plug threads are a common shop failure on this truck.
05Position the drain pan under the filter
The spin-on oil filter is mounted vertically on the passenger side of the block, below the exhaust manifold and behind the front tire. Slide the drain pan directly beneath it. Access is easier from the passenger wheel well than from under the truck.
06Remove the old filter
Fit a 24mm socket or 76mm cup wrench squarely on the base of the filter. Break the filter loose with a ratchet, then spin it off by hand while keeping it upright. Once the gasket clears the block, tip the filter into the drain pan and let it drain. Wipe the mounting surface on the block clean and confirm the old gasket did not stick to the boss. A double-gasketed filter is an instant oil leak the first time the engine starts.
07Prime and install the new filter
Pour clean oil into the new filter until it is roughly half full, then smear a thin film of fresh oil around the filter gasket. Thread the filter onto the block by hand until the gasket touches the mounting surface. Continue by hand exactly three quarters of a turn beyond gasket contact. Do not use a wrench for final tightening - the Mopar filter seals reliably at hand-tight plus three quarters, and the socket flats round off if wrench-torqued past that.
08Refill with oil
Remove the yellow oil fill cap on the passenger valve cover. Pour in 7.0 US quarts (6.6 liters) of 5W-20 full synthetic through a long-neck funnel. Reinstall the cap and start the engine. Watch the dashboard oil pressure indicator - it should extinguish within three seconds. Let the engine idle for one minute, then shut it down. Wait five minutes for the oil to settle back to the pan, then check the dipstick. The proper level is at the upper hash mark on the dipstick with the truck on level ground; add small amounts if the level reads below the mark.
09Reset the oil life reminder
Turn the ignition to Run without starting. Fully depress the accelerator three times within ten seconds. The dashboard will flash a confirmation and the oil life percentage will reset to 100. Turn the ignition off.
10Check for leaks
Start the truck again and idle for two minutes. Walk around and inspect the drain plug and filter for any weeping. A dry filter neck and dry pan boss with warm oil circulating is the confirmation that the job sealed correctly.
Notes
Reference guide. A general procedure compiled by Wrenchpit, not a first-hand write-up from one owner's vehicle. Torque figures, capacities and part numbers vary by model year, engine and trim — check them against your service manual and the labels on your old parts before you rely on them.
Applies to roughly 2013-2024 model years. Filed under 2018 because a guide carries a single model year.
The 5.7 Hemi takes a full 7.0 US quarts with a filter change, not 6.5 or 7.5. Underfilling by half a quart on this engine has been linked to top-end lifter noise on cold starts, particularly on trucks with MDS active. The MO-899 filter is Mopar's premium synthetic-media replacement and outlasts the base Mopar filter by roughly 3,000 miles. Fram XG10600 (Ultra Synthetic) and Wix XP 57502 use the same anti-drainback valve chemistry and are safe alternates. Avoid the Fram PH10600 economy filter on this engine - the paper media has been shown to shed above 8,000 miles and the shed fibers restrict oil flow to the tick-prone MDS lifters. Change intervals of 5,000 miles on a mostly-highway truck are conservative; short-trip and towing use should shorten to 3,500 to 4,000 miles. On DT-generation trucks (2019+), the etorque mild-hybrid variant uses the same oil and filter as the non-etorque 5.7 but has a slightly different splash panel with an additional two clips to remove for filter access. Always dispose of the old oil and filter at the parts counter where the new oil was purchased - most retailers accept both for free.
