2014-2019 Chevrolet Corvette (C7) LT1 oil and filter change
Tools
- 3/8 inch drive ratchet
- 15mm socket for the drain plug
- 32mm oil filter cap socket (Motivx MX2331 or equivalent)
- Torque wrench that covers 15 to 30 ft lbs
- Torque wrench that covers 60 to 300 in lbs
- Two-post lift or four jack stands rated 3 tons plus a floor jack (C7 clearance is too low for ramps without lift extensions)
- Oil drain pan, 10 quart capacity
- Long-neck funnel
- T15 Torx bit for undertray fasteners
- 7mm socket for undertray push-pin retainers
- Nitrile gloves and shop rags
Parts
- Engine oil — Mobil 1 Dexos2 5W-30 (Corvette factory fill on LT1 dry-sump and wet-sump), 8.5 US quarts wet sump / 9.5 US quarts dry sump (Z51 dry sump verify by RPO)
- Oil filter — AC Delco PF48E (Mobil 1 M1-201A, Wix 57060 acceptable OE equivalents)
- Drain plug gasket — GM 11562588 (aluminum, do not reuse)
Steps
01Warm the engine
Idle the engine for three minutes if starting cold. Warm oil pours faster and carries suspended contaminants out with it. Do not let it run to full operating temperature before draining; a scalding-hot LT1 delivers oil in the 240 F range at the drain plug and burns skin instantly.
02Lift the vehicle
The C7 chassis sits low enough that steel ramps are marginal even with lead-on extensions. A two-post lift is the correct answer. If using jack stands, lift at the factory jack pucks under the rocker seams and confirm stands are rated for the entire chassis weight. Chock the rear wheels before lifting the front.
03Remove the front and center undertrays
The C7 has two undertrays that must come off for oil service. The front tray drops with eight T15 Torx screws and four 7mm push-pin retainers. The center belly pan retains with six more T15 screws. Set both trays flat and out of the workspace. Undertray removal is not optional; the drain plug and filter are inaccessible from below without both trays down.
04Drain the oil
Position the drain pan under the drain plug at the rear of the oil pan. Break the 15mm drain plug loose, then finish by hand while pressing inward against the sealing surface. Once the threads release, pull the plug straight away in one motion. Let the oil drain for at least ten minutes. Wipe the drain boss clean, fit a new aluminum gasket, and reinstall the plug. Torque the drain plug to 18 ft lbs (25 Nm). Verify against your service manual. The LT1 aluminum oil pan does not tolerate over-torqued drain plugs; strip the threads and the pan is a several-hundred-dollar mistake.
05Remove the oil filter
The filter is a paper cartridge inside a plastic cap on the top rear of the engine, accessed from above through the top of the engine bay (base LT1 wet sump). On dry-sump Z51 and Z06 LT4 variants, the filter cap is in a different location; check the engine cover callout. Fit the 32mm cap socket squarely on the filter cap and turn counterclockwise. As the cap loosens, oil drains back into the housing through a bypass tube; wait ten seconds before lifting the cap out to avoid a splash. Pull the cap and cartridge together. Discard the cartridge and the cap O-ring.
06Install the new filter
Lubricate the new cap O-ring with fresh oil. Fit the new cartridge into the cap. Thread the cap into the housing by hand. Torque the oil filter cap to 18 ft lbs (25 Nm). Verify against your service manual.
07Refill with oil
Remove the fill cap on the driver-side valve cover. Wet-sump LT1: pour 8.5 US quarts of Dexos2 5W-30 through a long-neck funnel. Dry-sump: pour 9.5 US quarts. Reinstall the fill cap. Start the engine and confirm the oil pressure gauge reads normal within five seconds. Let it idle for one minute, then shut down. Wait five minutes for oil to settle back into the pan.
08Verify level
Check the dipstick or, on cars without a dipstick, the on-screen oil life monitor's oil level check. The level should read at the upper mark. Top off in quarter-quart increments if needed.
09Reinstall undertrays and reset the oil life monitor
Refit the center belly pan and front undertray with their T15 screws and push-pins. Lower the vehicle. Reset the oil life monitor: with the ignition on and engine off, press Menu, scroll to Vehicle Info, select Oil Life, then press and hold Set/Reset until the display reads 100%.
Notes
Reference guide. A general procedure compiled by Wrenchpit, not a first-hand write-up from one owner's vehicle. Torque figures, capacities and part numbers vary by model year, engine and trim — check them against your service manual and the labels on your old parts before you rely on them.
Applies to roughly 2014-2019 model years. Filed under 2016 because a guide carries a single model year.
The C7 LT1 (base, Grand Sport, Z51) and LT4 (Z06, ZR1) share the same fundamental oil service procedure but differ in sump type, capacity, and filter location. Always verify capacity by RPO code before ordering oil; a wet-sump owner who orders ten quarts and dumps them all in is going to overfill by a full quart and foam the crank. Dexos2 5W-30 is the factory spec; Mobil 1 Extended Performance in 5W-30 with the Dexos2 approval on the bottle is the community consensus fluid. Do not use Dexos1 gasoline-only fluids; the LT1 wants the Dexos2 (dexos-approved for extended drain) additive package for its AFM lifter loads. Track-driven cars should run 15W-50 or an oil approved for high-shear track use, and the oil interval should compress to every track event plus a fresh change before storage. The filter is a common counterfeit target on marketplace sites; buy from AC Delco authorized sellers or a reputable jobber. Skipping the undertray removal by trying to reach the drain plug through the pass-through hole is how people end up with 8 quarts of hot oil across the shop floor; the pass-through is not aligned with the drain plug on all trims.
