2008-2013 BMW M3 (E9x) S65 rod bearing replacement (in-car)
Tools
- Two-post lift or four jack stands rated 3 tons plus a floor jack
- 3/8 inch and 1/2 inch drive ratchets with metric sockets (8mm through 22mm)
- Torque wrench that covers 5 to 30 ft lbs
- Torque wrench that covers 30 to 100 ft lbs (0.5 percent accuracy preferred)
- Torque angle gauge
- E10, E12, E14 external Torx sockets
- T25, T30, T50 Torx bits
- 12 point (XZN) triple-square bit set
- Long extensions and swivel adapters
- Plastigage green (0.001 to 0.003 inch range)
- Feeler gauges
- Micrometer (0.0001 inch resolution, 50mm range); optional but recommended
- Sway bar drop socket set
- Subframe support fixture or stout jack with wide saddle

Steps
01Confirm the need and inspect the oil
Every S65 above 50,000 miles is a candidate for preventive rod bearing service. Take an oil sample and send it to a lab (Blackstone or similar) before disassembly. Copper values above 40 ppm or lead above 20 ppm are the classic signal that bearings are already shedding material. High-mile untreated S65 rod bearings that have not thrown yet are still a matter of when, not if.
02Lift the car and drain the oil
Lift the M3 to full working height. Remove both undertrays. Drain the engine oil through the drain plug. Fit a fresh crush washer at reinstall and torque the drain plug to 18 ft lbs (25 Nm). Verify against your service manual.
03Drop the exhaust and front sway bar
Unbolt the mid-pipe from the manifold flanges and support both cats on jack stands. Disconnect the O2 sensor harnesses at the chassis clip before letting the exhaust drop. Remove the front sway bar (two end links, two center clamps) and set it aside; the sway bar sits directly under the oil pan and blocks pan removal.
04Support the subframe and lower the front subframe partially
The S65 oil pan cannot come off with the subframe fully in place. Support the front subframe with a subframe fixture or two floor jacks. Remove the four subframe-to-chassis bolts (per side per bushing depending on chassis year) and lower the subframe roughly 3 inches; enough to gain oil pan clearance without disconnecting the steering column shaft. Do not fully drop the subframe; the steering column shaft indexing will not return correctly without a special locking pin.
05Remove the oil pan
Remove the pan bolts in a crossing pattern. Break the pan gasket seal by working a plastic pry tool along the seam; never a metal blade against the aluminum block. Lower the pan straight down and clear it around the pickup tube. Once the pan is out, remove the oil pickup tube and set the assembly aside.
06Rotate the crank to expose each rod
With the pan out, rotate the engine by hand at the crank bolt to bring each rod journal to bottom dead center for access. Work one rod at a time. Note the numbers stamped on the caps; they must return to the same position and orientation.
07Remove one rod cap and inspect
Loosen and remove the two rod bolts on the target rod. Lift the cap straight down. Push the rod slightly upward into the bore to expose the bearing shell. Inspect the shell for the tell-tale S65 pattern: a copper-colored streak worn through the babbitt overlay at the load face. Any copper visible is bearing damage. Retain the shell for comparison but do not re-use it.
08Plastigage the new bearing
Wipe the crank journal spotlessly clean with brake cleaner and a lint-free rag. Fit the new upper bearing shell into the rod, then a strip of green Plastigage on the crank journal. Fit the new lower shell in the cap. Install the cap in the correct orientation. Torque the new rod bolts to 5 ft lbs (7 Nm), then 15 ft lbs (20 Nm), then 100 degrees. Verify against your service manual. Remove the cap and read the Plastigage width against the packet gauge. Target clearance is 0.0012 to 0.0022 inch. Anything outside spec means the journal is worn undersized and replacement bearings alone will not deliver oil clearance; the crank has to come out for measurement.
09Final install with assembly lube
Once clearance is confirmed on the target rod, wipe off the Plastigage. Coat the new bearing shells with a thin film of engine assembly lube. Install upper shell in rod, lower shell in cap, cap in orientation. Torque the S65 rod bolts to 5 ft lbs (7 Nm), then 15 ft lbs (20 Nm), then 100 degrees. Verify against your service manual. Rod bolts are torque-to-yield, single-use only. Do not re-torque bolts from step 8 that have already been through the sequence.
10Repeat for remaining rods
Work each remaining rod in the same manner. Rotate the crank between rods to access each journal at BDC. Confirm every torque cycle uses fresh bolts.
11Reassemble
Fit the oil pickup tube with a new O-ring. Torque the pickup tube bolts to 89 in lbs (10 Nm). Verify against your service manual. Set the oil pan with a new gasket. Torque the pan bolts to 89 in lbs (10 Nm) in a crossing pattern. Verify against your service manual. Raise the subframe back into position and torque the subframe bolts to the OE spec for the chassis year (verify against your service manual; typically 74 ft lbs plus 90 degrees for E9x). Reinstall the sway bar and exhaust with new gaskets.
12Fill and start
Refill with 9.5 US quarts of the correct 10W-60 oil and a new filter. Crank with coils and injectors disabled until oil pressure registers. Reconnect coils, start, and let the engine idle for fifteen minutes at 1,500 rpm; never let a freshly bearing-serviced engine loaf at 700 rpm idle for the first heat cycle. Perform a fresh oil change after the first 500 miles to capture assembly debris. Send the drained oil to the lab and compare copper and lead values against pre-service numbers.

The S65 4.0L V8 in the E9x M3 shipped with rod bearing clearances at the tight end of BMW's own spec range, paired with a bearing shell coating that wears rapidly under thin-film boundary lubrication at low rpm. The failure mode is well-documented across m3forum, BimmerForums, and the BMW CCA tech tracks: the babbitt overlay wears through, copper migrates into the oil, then the journal fails catastrophically. Preventive replacement between 60,000 and 100,000 miles has become the community standard, ideally with the WPC-treated coated bearings from vendors like BE Bearings or the ACL series that adds clearance. Track cars need shorter intervals; 30,000 miles is not too soon for a dedicated track M3. Cross-reference oil analysis before and after service; if copper does not drop after the swap, the crank is undersized and the engine wants a rebuild rather than another bearing set. Always use fresh torque-to-yield rod bolts on every torque cycle including the Plastigage check; a rod bolt taken through the yield sequence twice is a rod knock waiting to happen. Bar the engine over gently after assembly to confirm no bind before pouring oil.
