2013-2024 Toyota RAV4 tire rotation procedure

Tools

  • Torque wrench that covers 60 to 100 ft lbs (1/2 inch drive)
  • 21mm socket for the lug nuts (2013-2018) or 22mm (2019-2024)
  • 1/2 inch drive breaker bar
  • Floor jack rated 2 tons minimum
  • Four jack stands rated 2 tons minimum (or two jack stands + factory scissor jack for a two-corner rotation)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Tire tread depth gauge (or a US quarter for a rough check)
  • Tire pressure gauge
  • Chalk or masking tape (for marking wheel positions)

Steps

01Determine the correct rotation pattern

The 2013-2024 RAV4 ships from the factory with non-directional, non-asymmetric tires on all trims except the TRD Off-Road (2020+) which specifies a specific tire orientation. For standard tires, use the modified X pattern for AWD:

  • Front tires cross to the opposite side of the rear
  • Rear tires move straight forward to the same side

For front-wheel-drive trims, the modified X pattern reverses:

  • Rear tires cross to the opposite side of the front
  • Front tires move straight backward to the same side

If the tires are directional (arrow molded on the sidewall pointing to intended rotation direction), the pattern reduces to front-to-back same-side only - never side-to-side. Confirm the sidewall marking before starting.

02Chock the wheels and break lug nuts loose

Park on level, hard ground. Set the parking brake and chock the front wheels if lifting the rear first (or the rear wheels if lifting the front first). With all four wheels on the ground, break each lug nut loose a quarter turn using the breaker bar. Attempting this after the wheel is airborne will spin the hub and can throw the vehicle off the jack. Mark each tire with chalk to identify its current position (LF, RF, LR, RR) so the rotation pattern is not confused halfway through.

03Lift and support the vehicle

The 2013-2024 RAV4 has four factory jacking points on the pinch welds behind the front wheels and forward of the rear wheels. Place the floor jack under the front subframe cross member to lift the front, or the rear differential housing (AWD) or rear axle beam (FWD) to lift the rear. Position jack stands under the pinch welds and lower the vehicle onto the stands. Confirm all four wheels are off the ground and the RAV4 is stable before removing any lug nuts. Never work under a vehicle supported only by a floor jack.

04Remove the wheels and inspect

Spin off the lug nuts and set the wheels face-down flat to protect the paint. Look at each tire's tread - check for uneven inner or outer edge wear (alignment issue), cupping (worn shocks or struts), center wear (over-inflation), or feathering (toe misalignment). Measure tread depth at three points across each tire with the gauge. If any tire shows less than 4/32 inch remaining tread, the whole set is at or near replacement and rotating adds little benefit. If the depths differ by more than 3/32 inch between the deepest and shallowest tire, the rotation interval was too long.

05Move each tire to its new position

Follow the pattern established in step 1. Set each tire at its new corner, aligned with the wheel hub studs. For AWD models specifically, matching tire diameter across all four corners matters - the center clutch pack in the RAV4 AWD system is heat-sensitive and mismatched tire circumferences generate slip that heats the clutch pack. Rotate on schedule (5,000 to 7,500 mile interval) to keep wear even.

06Reinstall wheels and torque in stages

Start each lug nut by hand, two full turns, to prevent cross-threading. Snug them in a five-point star pattern. Lower the RAV4 to the ground with all its weight on the wheels. Torque the RAV4 wheel lug nuts to 76 ft lbs (103 Nm). Verify against your service manual - 2019+ TRD Off-Road with the 18 inch alloys uses the same 76 ft lb spec but with M12x1.5 studs, so aftermarket lug nuts must match thread pitch and seat style (60 degree conical).

Torque in a star pattern in two passes: first pass to half spec (roughly 38 ft lbs), second pass to full spec. Re-torque after 50 miles of driving. The alloy wheel and hub interface settles slightly under load and lug nut torque can drop 10 to 20 percent in the first day of driving. A missed re-torque is the most common cause of a lost wheel a week after rotation.

07Reset the tire pressure and TPMS

Set each tire to the pressure listed on the door jamb placard (typically 33 psi front and 32 psi rear for 2013-2018 RAV4, 36 psi front and 35 psi rear for 2019-2024 with 18 inch wheels - check the specific vehicle). If the RAV4 has direct TPMS with tire-position learning (2019+), the TPMS relearn is automatic after 10 minutes of driving above 15 mph. On indirect-TPMS trims (2013-2018 base), hold the TPMS reset button under the dash for three seconds until the indicator light blinks twice - this baselines the new positions.

Rotation intervals are shorter than most owners think. Every 5,000 miles is the correct AWD interval and matches the RAV4's oil-change reminder, which makes for a natural pairing. Skipping to 10,000 miles produces visible outer-edge wear on the front tires within 20,000 miles on the same set - front tires wear the outside shoulder from scrub during cornering, and only rotation keeps that wear distributed.

This procedure works on any modern car or SUV with the standard four-wheel rotation pattern - Camry, Corolla, Accord, CR-V, Civic, Highlander, Pilot, Rogue, Altima, Escape, Explorer, Equinox, and most compact and midsize crossovers all follow the same modified X pattern (crossing the drive-wheel axle to the non-drive axle). Pickup trucks with staggered wheel sizes (some Silverado trims with different front and rear wheel offsets) require a straight front-to-back rotation only. Vehicles with directional or asymmetric tires require the same rules regardless of chassis - read the sidewall.

Skip the tire shop's free-with-purchase rotation offer if it means driving out of the way each time. Free at the shop is worthless if the rotation is skipped for six months because the drive is inconvenient. In-driveway rotation on a set of ramps or jack stands takes 45 minutes, requires no appointment, and can be paired with a brake-pad inspection and lug-nut re-torque in the same session. That said, if the shop rotation includes a road-force balance check at the same visit, take the shop offer - a bent wheel or a tire with a broken belt shows up as vibration after rotation, and the shop's balancer catches it while the wheels are already off.
