Tools

  • 3/8 inch drive ratchet with metric sockets (10mm through 22mm)
  • Torque wrench that covers 5 to 35 ft lbs
  • T27, T30, T50 Torx bits
  • 8mm hex bit
  • Two-post lift or four jack stands rated 3 tons plus a floor jack
  • Fluid transfer pump or bottle with flexible fill tube (Motive Products fluid pump preferred)

  • Porsche PIWIS diagnostic tool or Durametric Enthusiast with PDK adaptation capability (required for accurate temperature fill)
  • Infrared thermometer as a backup temperature reference
  • Nitrile gloves, shop rags

  • Filter housing O-ring — Porsche 999.707.492.40 (supplied with filter)
  • Drain plug seal ring — Porsche 900.123.114.30 (aluminum, do not reuse)
  • Fill plug seal ring — Porsche 900.123.115.30 (aluminum, do not reuse)

Steps

01Bring the transmission up to service temperature

Drive the car for ten to fifteen minutes until the transmission reaches normal operating temperature. Park on a level lift, engage first gear briefly, then return to Park. The fill procedure specifies a fluid temperature window of 30 to 40 C (86 to 104 F), so the goal at this stage is a hot drain followed by a controlled cool-down before filling. Chock the front wheels.

02Lift the car and remove the rear undertray

Lift to full working height. Remove the rear undertray by extracting roughly a dozen T30 Torx screws around its perimeter. The undertray covers the PDK sump and both fluid ports. Set the tray aside.

03Position the drain pan and remove the drain plug

The drain plug sits on the underside of the PDK sump, toward the passenger side. Position the drain pan below and slightly forward of the plug; the fluid streams out at an angle when the plug releases. Break the 8mm hex drain plug loose, back it out by hand, and pull it away in one motion. PDK fluid is hot and it flows fast; hesitating with the plug half out delivers a lap-full of ATF. Let it drain for at least fifteen minutes.

04Remove and replace the external filter

The external cartridge filter is retained by a housing on the driver side of the PDK sump. Remove the three T27 Torx bolts holding the filter cap, then pull the cap and cartridge as an assembly. Fluid trapped in the housing will spill; reposition the drain pan. Discard the cartridge and the housing O-ring. Fit the new filter into the housing, install the new O-ring, and reinstall the cap. Torque the filter cap bolts to 71 in lbs (8 Nm) in a crossing pattern. Verify against your service manual.

05Reinstall the drain plug with new seal

Fit a new aluminum seal ring to the drain plug. Thread the plug in by hand, then torque the PDK drain plug to 22 ft lbs (30 Nm). Verify against your service manual. Do not reuse the aluminum seal ring; PDK sumps are magnesium and will not tolerate a repeat torque cycle on a crushed washer.

06Refill through the fill port

Remove the fill plug on the driver side of the sump using an 8mm hex. Using a fluid transfer pump, add 7.0 US liters of the correct PDK fluid. Reinstall the fill plug loosely.

07Perform the temperature-controlled top-off

Start the engine and run through P-R-N-D-N-R-P with a two-second dwell in each position. Return to Park. Connect PIWIS or Durametric and monitor the PDK oil temperature parameter. Fluid must be between 30 and 40 C (86 to 104 F) during the top-off. Remove the fill plug. Add fluid slowly until it just begins to weep out of the fill port. Reinstall the fill plug with a new seal ring and torque the PDK fill plug to 59 in lbs (6.7 Nm). Verify against your service manual. Overfilling causes aeration and clutch shudder; the temperature window and weep-out signal are the only correct fill indicators.

08Reinstall the undertray and test

Refit the rear undertray with its T30 screws. Lower the car. Drive gently for the first five kilometers and confirm that low-speed shifts are crisp with no shudder from a standing start. Recheck for leaks at the drain plug, fill plug, and filter cap after the drive.

Porsche officially lists PDK fluid as sealed-for-life, but the enthusiast consensus across Rennlist, 6SpeedOnline, and PCA regional tech sessions is a fluid and filter change every 40,000 to 60,000 miles or every four years, whichever comes first. The DL501 (991.1) and its evolution in the 991.2 both use a wet dual-clutch pack whose ATF is exposed to the same shear and heat that ages every other dual-clutch fluid. The external filter is a real filter with real bypass logic, not a strainer; skipping it during a fluid change halves the service. On 991 Turbo, GT3, and GT3 RS variants, the total fill capacity differs by a few tenths of a liter from base Carrera specs; always cross-reference the PIWIS fill quantity for the specific chassis before ordering fluid. Aftermarket ATF DCT 971-equivalent fluids are acceptable if they carry the exact Porsche spec on the label; a generic DCT fluid without the 971 approval will cause clutch pack chatter within a few thousand miles. Buy fluid in sealed factory containers and inspect the box for tampering; counterfeit PDK fluid has surfaced on marketplace platforms and does not meet the friction modifier specification.
