2015-2024 Ford F-150 jump start procedure

  • Jumper cables, 4 gauge minimum, 20 ft length (Cartman 4 AWG or NoOne 2 AWG acceptable)
  • OR portable lithium jump pack rated 1000A peak minimum (NOCO GB40, Weego 44s, or Halo Bolt 58830 acceptable)
  • Nitrile gloves and safety glasses
  • Small wire brush or battery terminal cleaner (optional, useful when clamps are corroded)

Steps

01Confirm the battery is actually the problem

A clicking starter, dim dash lights that dim further when the key is turned, or no dash illumination at all points to a dead 12V battery. Full silence with no dash lights and no click can also be a dead battery, but a corroded terminal or a blown 175A fuse in the underhood BJB will present the same way. Wiggle both battery clamps and confirm the dome light comes on before assuming a jump will help.

02Position the donor vehicle or ready the jump pack

If using a donor car, park it nose to nose with the F-150, close enough for the cables to reach comfortably with slack. Shut the donor engine off. Never jump with the donor engine running at high idle on a modern truck. The 2015-2024 F-150 uses a smart charging system and voltage-sensitive electronics that a spiking alternator can damage. If using a jump pack, place it on the fender or a rag on top of the battery and leave it powered off until cables are connected.

03Locate the F-150 remote jump studs

The battery on the 2015-2024 F-150 sits in the passenger-side engine bay, but Ford also provides a dedicated remote jump point on the driver's side. Look for the red plastic cover marked with a + symbol on top of the underhood BJB (Battery Junction Box) on the driver's fender. Flip the cover up to expose the M6 threaded jump stud. The chassis ground point is the unpainted stud on the strut tower a few inches away, also marked with a ground symbol. Using the remote posts keeps clamp arcs away from the battery vent and is Ford's preferred procedure.

04Connect the cables in the correct order

Order matters. Connect in this sequence:

  1. Red clamp to the F-150 remote positive stud (or battery positive if using the battery directly)
  2. Red clamp to the donor battery positive terminal
  3. Black clamp to the donor battery negative terminal
  4. Black clamp to the F-150 chassis ground stud (not the battery negative)

Grounding to chassis rather than battery negative keeps any hydrogen vapor at the battery cap away from the final spark. Do not let the two clamps on either cable touch each other or any metal surface once one end is live - a direct short at 700 CCA will vaporize the clamp tips and can burn skin badly.

05Start the F-150

If using a donor car, wait two minutes with cables connected before cranking. This lets the donor battery bring the F-150 battery up enough that the starter is not pulling the full load through the cables. Then start the F-150 normally. If it cranks slowly, wait another minute and try again. If it does not crank at all after five minutes on cables, the fault is beyond a discharged battery and further cranking will only overheat the cables. If using a lithium pack, most units include a manual override button held for three seconds to fire the boost mode - read the pack's instructions once before the roadside emergency.

06Disconnect in reverse order

With the F-150 running, disconnect in the exact reverse of the connection order:

  1. Black clamp from the F-150 chassis ground
  2. Black clamp from the donor battery negative
  3. Red clamp from the donor battery positive
  4. Red clamp from the F-150 remote positive stud

Close the red plastic cover over the jump stud. It clicks shut and is not optional. An exposed live stud that contacts a wrench dropped into the engine bay will short to the hood in a shower of sparks.

07Drive to recharge

The battery needs at least 30 minutes of highway driving to recover the charge the jump consumed, and that assumes the alternator is healthy. Idling for the same duration recovers roughly a third as much charge and is not sufficient. If the truck dies again after shutdown, the battery is at end of life or the alternator has failed. Load-test the battery at any parts store for a free reading before buying a replacement.

This procedure works on any modern truck or SUV with a remote underhood jump post and a chassis ground stud. Silverado 1500, Sierra 1500, Ram 1500, Tundra, Tahoe, Suburban, Expedition, and most half-ton trucks from 2010 forward follow the same pattern - the exact stud location varies but the sequence does not. On vehicles without a remote jump post (many older sedans, Honda Fit, base-trim compacts) connect directly to the battery terminals in the same red-to-positive, black-to-chassis order.

Modern trucks with start-stop systems and electric power steering are more voltage-sensitive than older iron. Skip the old-school trick of revving the donor engine to speed up the jump - it can trigger stored fault codes for overvoltage on the recipient truck's body control module. A calm, cable-connected two-minute wait is faster than clearing DTCs at a scanner. Portable lithium jump packs have quietly replaced donor-vehicle jumps for most drivers because they eliminate the wrong-polarity risk (most packs include reverse-polarity protection) and never require a second car to be present. A 1000A pack fits in the door pocket and will jump a healthy F-150 with a fully dead battery two or three times on a full charge.

The battery in the 2015-2024 F-150 is a Group H8 (some trims H7) AGM unit. Repeatedly running an AGM battery flat kills it faster than the same abuse on a flooded battery. After the second jump event in a month, replace the battery and stop driving on borrowed time.
