01Understand what a code actually tells you
An OBD2 diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is a five-character identifier the ECM sets when a monitored parameter falls outside its expected range. The format is a letter followed by four digits - P0301 is powertrain code, cylinder 1 misfire; P0171 is powertrain code, bank 1 lean; C1234 is a chassis code; B0123 is a body code; U0100 is a network code. The code does not diagnose the failure - it names the symptom. P0300 (random multiple misfire) can be caused by fuel, spark, compression, timing, or wiring problems. A code is the first step in a diagnostic tree, not the end of one.
The 2015-2024 F-150 has three separate diagnostic buses accessible through the OBD2 port: the powertrain network (P and U codes), the body network (B codes), and the chassis network (C codes). Cheap generic OBD2 readers only pull powertrain codes and miss the ABS, airbag, TPMS, and body-control-module codes entirely. For any driveability complaint the P codes are the target; for warning lights that are not the check-engine light (ABS, airbag, tire pressure), an enhanced reader that pulls all modules is required.
02Locate the OBD2 port
The OBD2 port on the 2015-2024 F-150 is under the driver-side dash, above the pedals, offset toward the center of the truck. It is a trapezoidal 16-pin connector, always in the same location on any 1996-and-newer US-market vehicle by federal mandate. If a plastic access door covers the port on higher trims, pop it open by hand. Confirm the port is clean and the pins are not damaged - a bent pin will fault the scan tool connection.
03Connect the scanner and power up the truck
With the ignition off, plug the scanner or Bluetooth dongle into the OBD2 port. The scanner draws power from pin 16 of the port, which is live even with the key out. Turn the ignition to run without starting the engine. Wait 10 seconds for the ECM to complete its boot cycle. Follow the scanner's connect procedure - for BlueDriver and similar app-based tools, pair the dongle to the phone via Bluetooth first, then open the app and select "connect to vehicle." Confirm the scanner reads the VIN correctly. A VIN mismatch means the scanner is misinterpreting the vehicle year or model, and the code lookups will be wrong.
04Read the pending, stored, and permanent codes
Cheap scanners only read stored codes - codes that have set the check-engine light. Better scanners also read pending codes (fault detected once but not yet enough cycles to set the light) and permanent codes (set the light previously, will not clear until the ECM confirms two consecutive good drive cycles). Read all three categories. Pending codes are the most useful diagnostic - they show a fault the ECM is beginning to notice before it becomes a hard light-on failure.
Record each code, its description, and the freeze-frame data (engine RPM, coolant temp, load, short-term fuel trim, long-term fuel trim, MAF reading) at the moment the code set. Freeze-frame is the single most useful piece of information for diagnosing an intermittent code - a P0171 (lean) with freeze-frame showing 3500 rpm and 85 percent load points at a fuel-delivery issue; the same code with freeze-frame showing 800 rpm idle points at a vacuum leak.
05Look up each code before clearing
Do not clear codes as the first step. Look up each code with its manufacturer-specific detail before clearing. The generic OBD2 code list (SAE J2012) covers the base set, but Ford-specific extensions (P1xxx and P2xxx range) require a Ford-specific lookup or the enhanced database in a paid app like BlueDriver or FORScan. P0316 on a 2015-2024 F-150 3.5L EcoBoost specifically flags "engine misfire detected on startup, first 1000 revolutions" and is a strong indicator of cam phaser wear before a more general misfire code sets - a generic reader would show the code but not the Ford-specific context.
Cross-reference the code against the F-150 owner community's known-issue list for the specific engine (3.5L EcoBoost cam phasers, 5.0L Coyote spark plug wear, 2.7L EcoBoost timing chain). Model-specific TSBs solve many codes without any parts.
06Clear the codes only after a diagnosis
Once each code has been recorded, its freeze-frame captured, and a diagnostic hypothesis formed, clear the codes to establish a clean baseline. Clearing without a plan defeats the purpose - a code will just come back after a few drive cycles and the diagnostic clock resets. On the scanner, select "Erase codes" or "Clear DTCs." Confirm the prompt. The scanner will confirm codes cleared and readiness monitors reset.
Do not clear codes immediately before a state emissions inspection. Clearing codes resets the eight OBD2 readiness monitors (catalyst, evap, EGR, O2 heater, O2 sensor, secondary air, misfire, and fuel system). Most states require six of eight monitors "ready" to pass emissions. The monitors set themselves after 50 to 200 miles of specific drive-cycle conditions. Clearing codes the day before an inspection guarantees a failed inspection, not a passed one.
07Drive the truck and re-scan
Drive the truck for at least 20 miles of mixed city and highway driving. Re-connect the scanner and re-read codes. Codes that return within one drive cycle are hard faults that need the parts or repair identified in step 5. Codes that do not return may have been triggered by a one-off event (a cold-weather sensor glitch, a low fuel tank sloshing) and are not necessarily a real fault. Save the pre-clear scan log and the post-clear scan log for reference.

Reading OBD2 codes with a $30 code reader has become a universal DIY skill because dealer scan-tool sessions run $150-250 for a "diagnostic fee" that often boils down to plugging in the same generic reader an owner could buy for a fraction of the cost. The scanner does not diagnose the vehicle - the operator diagnoses the vehicle using the codes and freeze-frame as inputs.
This procedure works on any 1996-and-newer US-market vehicle - Silverado, Ram 1500, Tundra, Camry, Civic, Accord, RAV4, Rogue, Wrangler, and every car and light truck sold since the federal OBD2 mandate all use the same 16-pin connector and the same generic code set. Manufacturer-specific enhanced codes vary by brand and require brand-specific software or a scanner with the appropriate database (Ford: FORScan; GM: Tech2Win; Mopar: AlfaOBD; VAG: VCDS or OBDeleven).
Skip the parts store's free code-read service if the goal is anything beyond a rough starting point. Parts store readers pull generic codes only, offer no freeze-frame, and often push the caller toward parts they sell rather than a correct diagnosis. A Bluetooth dongle paired with a paid app (BlueDriver, FORScan, OBD Fusion) costs less than a single shop diagnostic fee and reads enhanced codes on every module for the life of the vehicle.
FORScan is the specific pick for the 2015-2024 F-150 because it accesses Ford's proprietary modules (BCM, ABS, TPMS, TCM, IPMA) beyond what generic scanners see, and it enables limited configuration changes (auto-lock behavior, DRL settings, tire size adjustment for aftermarket wheels). FORScan is free for the lite version and paid for the extended version, and it requires either a Ford-specific dongle (OBDLink EX, ELMConfig OBDII-USB) or a compatible ELM327 with the MS-CAN switch. The paid version pays for itself the first time the truck sets an ABS or transmission code that would otherwise be a dealer visit.
