- Two floor jacks or a lift, plus jack stands rated 3 tons minimum
- Wheel chocks

- Small catch pan for the fluid that escapes during the check

Steps
01Understand the dipstickless design and why it matters
The 2014-2020 Nissan Rogue uses the Jatco JF017E continuously variable transmission with a sealed case and no dipstick. Nissan's design intent is "fill for life at the factory, only serviced at scheduled intervals." In practice the CVT loses fluid slowly through the axle seals and cooler line fittings as it ages, and a low CVT is a known cause of the shudder, judder, and hesitation complaints the platform is notorious for.
Fluid level check on the JF017E is not a dipstick pull - it is a fluid overflow procedure at a specific transmission temperature. The transmission must be at 95 to 105 F (35 to 40 C) when the check plug is opened. Fluid over-added at the wrong temperature will read correct at the check plug but be dangerously overfilled at operating temperature, causing foaming and belt slip. The temperature step is not optional.
02Warm the transmission to check-plug temperature
Start the engine cold. Do not warm it up in the driveway - the target is 95-105 F transmission temperature, which is roughly ambient plus 15-20 F. If it is currently 70 F outside, drive the Rogue in Drive around the block for two to four minutes and stop. If it is 90 F outside, the transmission may already be at check temperature after a 30 second warm-up idle. Confirm temperature with the OBD2 scanner reading CVT fluid temp live PID. If a scanner is not available, park the Rogue and use the IR thermometer to read the aluminum surface of the transmission oil pan bottom - the fluid inside runs 10-15 F cooler than the pan surface immediately after driving.
Below 95 F the fluid volume reads high at the plug and the procedure will result in underfill. Above 105 F the fluid reads low and the procedure will result in overfill. Overfill on a JF017E is significantly worse than underfill - foaming CVT fluid does not maintain hydraulic pressure and the transmission enters slip and burn-off mode within minutes.
03Lift the vehicle level
The Rogue must be perfectly level for the overflow procedure to give a correct reading. Lift both front wheels and both rear wheels to the same height using a lift, or use ramps at both ends. Confirm level with a bubble level on the transmission pan or the rocker panels. A tilted vehicle will read fluid volume incorrectly.
04Remove the underbody splash panel
The plastic splash panel covers the bottom of the transmission and the front subframe. Remove the retaining 10mm bolts (roughly 10 fasteners around the perimeter) and drop the panel out of the way. The check plug and drain plug are now visible on the bottom side of the transmission case.
05Position the catch pan and open the check plug
The check plug is a 5mm hex-head plug on the driver's side of the transmission pan, roughly at the same height as the mating flange between the pan and the transmission case. It is NOT the drain plug (drain plug is a larger 8mm hex on the lowest point of the pan). Position the catch pan directly below the check plug. Fit the 5mm hex key into the check plug and turn counterclockwise to crack it loose. A small stream of fluid should trickle out.
- If a steady trickle runs for 10-30 seconds and then stops, the fluid level is CORRECT for the check temperature. Reinstall the check plug with a fresh crush washer.
- If no fluid comes out, the CVT is LOW and needs top-up (proceed to step 6).
- If fluid gushes out rapidly and continues past 30 seconds, the CVT is OVERFILLED. Let it drain until it slows to a stop trickle, then reinstall with a fresh washer.
06Top up if low
If no fluid came out of the check plug, the CVT is low and needs added fluid. There is no fill plug per se - fluid is added through the case vent or through a top-side charge pipe fitting depending on model year. The 2014-2020 Rogue uses the case vent on top of the transmission, accessible through the engine bay after removing the airbox and battery tray for space.
Alternatively, and more commonly for DIY, fluid is pumped up through the check plug hole using a fluid transfer pump. Fit the pump discharge hose into the check plug bore (bore is threaded - the hose seats against the threads and cannot leak backward while pumping). Pump in Nissan NS-3 CVT fluid in 200 ml increments. After each 200 ml, wait 60 seconds for the fluid to distribute, then pull the pump hose out. If fluid does not run back out the check plug hole, the level is still low - pump another 200 ml. If fluid does run out, the level is now correct - reinstall the check plug.
07Torque the check plug and reinstall the splash panel
Fit a fresh crush washer on the check plug. Torque the CVT check plug to 25 ft lbs (34 Nm). Verify against your service manual - under-torqued check plugs leak; over-torqued check plugs strip the aluminum case threads.
Reinstall the underbody splash panel and its 10mm fasteners. Lower the vehicle. Drive it 10 miles of mixed conditions and re-verify the temperature and check plug reading. Confirm no leaks from the check plug or the drain plug.

The 2014-2020 Rogue CVT is at the center of a well-documented class of failures involving judder, shudder at 30-45 mph, delayed engagement from a stop, and eventual complete transmission failure often before 100,000 miles. Nissan issued an extended warranty (T21 campaign) for many affected VINs - verify at a Nissan dealer whether the specific VIN has active coverage before spending money on a fluid service. If the CVT is exhibiting shudder symptoms, a fluid check and top-up is worth doing but is not a guaranteed cure - the internal belt and pulley wear is often the true cause and no amount of fluid service reverses it.
Nissan recommends a full CVT fluid change at 60,000 miles for severe service (towing, mountain, hot climate) and does not specify an interval for normal service - many owners and independent shops treat the "no scheduled interval" as marketing rather than engineering and change the fluid every 30-40,000 miles as preventive maintenance. Fluid that comes out chocolate brown or has a burnt smell is overdue and even a full drain-and-refill will only extend the transmission's life for another few years at that point.
This procedure applies to any modern CVT-equipped vehicle with a dipstickless transmission - Nissan Altima, Sentra, Pathfinder, Murano, and Infiniti QX50/QX60 all use variations of the Jatco CVT and follow the same temperature-controlled overflow procedure. Subaru's TR580/TR690 CVTs use a similar procedure with different fluid (Subaru High Torque CVTF or CVTF-II). Toyota's K-series CVTs (Corolla, C-HR) use a variant procedure and Toyota CVT Fluid FE. Do NOT cross-fluid between brands - CVT belt/chain and pulley coatings are engineered for specific friction modifiers, and the wrong fluid destroys the transmission within tens of thousands of miles.
Do not add CVT fluid without verifying temperature. Do not top up "by feel" or "until it looks right." A JF017E overfilled by half a quart will foam within 10 miles of highway driving and can strand the vehicle. The temperature-controlled overflow procedure is the only correct fill method.
Skip aftermarket "CVT fluid" branded generically. The Nissan NS-3 spec has a specific friction curve and metallurgy that generic CVT fluids do not match. Idemitsu manufactures the Genuine Nissan NS-3 fluid at their Japan plant and sells the identical formulation under their own label at roughly half the dealer price - this is one of the few cases where a private-label substitute is chemically identical to the dealer part. Valvoline Full Synthetic CVT labeled "meets NS-3 spec" is a widely accepted alternative. Do not use "multi-vehicle CVT fluid" that lists a dozen specs on the label - the fluid is a compromise that meets no single spec well.
